VESTAL, N.Y. (AP) — Investigators are looking into the cause of a fire at an upstate New York motel where one person was killed and another injured.

Officials say the fire started around 4 a.m. Tuesday at the Skylark Motel in Vestal, outside Binghamton. When firefighters arrived on the scene the blaze was engulfing the two-story building.

Fire crews battled the blaze amid heavy snowfall. Officials say it took firefighters about an hour to extinguish the fire, which caused extensive damage to the business.

Afterward a search of the motel revealed one person had died. Vestal police haven't released the victim's identity yet.

One person was hospitalized with injuries that weren't life-threatening.

The investigation is continuing.
