SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — New York state is providing more than $136,000 in funding to colleges, agencies and other entities for Great Lakes research projects.

The money from the state Environmental Protection Fund is directed by the Great Lakes Research Consortium, comprised of 18 New York colleges and universities with nine affiliated campuses in Ontario, Canada.

The New York schools receiving funding include Syracuse University, Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, Clarkson University in Potsdam, St. Lawrence University in Canton and the state College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse.

Among the other grant recipients are the Onondaga (ahn-uhn-DAH'-gah) Audubon Society in Syracuse and Audubon New York in Troy.

The consortium says the funds will be used to research such issues as invasive species, endangered wildlife and emerging contaminants.
