GREECE, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say two adults who were with a child when she wandered off and drowned in the Erie Canal are now being held on drug charges.

According to the Democrat and Chronicle , police allege 25-year-old Laura McCasland and 23-year-old Tyler Kanaley had been using marijuana for some time when 6-year-old Alliyah Williams disappeared at around 7 p.m. Thursday.

Divers recovered her body in the canal in the town of Greece, a Rochester suburb. Police say she apparently fell into the water while retrieving her sandals after canoeing with the adults and her 11-year-old sister.

Greece Police Chief Patrick Phelan says police found 31 pounds of marijuana at a home where the defendants were staying.

Kanaley was the little girl's cousin.

There was no immediate information on attorneys who could comment on the defendants' behalf.
