BARRE, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say two people have died after their car turned into the path of a tractor-trailer at an intersection on a rural western New York road.

The Orleans County Sheriff's Office says the accident occurred around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at an intersection on Route 31A in the town of Barre, 30 miles (48 kilometers) west of Rochester.

Deputies say the man driving the car stopped at the intersection, then failed to yield the right of way by turning left into the path of a truck. The collision sent the car into a tree.

Police say the car's driver was airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, where he later died. A woman riding with him was pronounced dead at the scene.

Their names haven't been released.

The truck driver wasn't injured.
