BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say two brothers from Texas have been sentenced for failing to pay more than $1 million in New York state sales tax collected at gas stations they owned in the Buffalo area.

The Erie County District Attorney's Office said Wednesday that 51-year-old Latif Maredia and 53-year-old Ilias Maredia, both of Stafford, Texas, pleaded guilty to grand larceny and were sentenced to five years' probation.

Prosecutors say the brothers kept more than $1.2 million in sales tax from seven gas stations they owned in the county between March 2008 and June 2012.

Officials say the Maredias have repaid $612,000 to New York state and are required to pay the same amount over the next five years.
