The first weekend in May is known for Central New Yorkers as the opening of Walleye fishing. You will see fisherman flocking to Oneida Lake, the rivers surrounding it, and of course Delta Dam. What type of baits and lures work best for amazing walleye fishing?

Around 188 million walleye are currently stocked in 35 waters across New York. How do you even begin to catch some of these amazing fish? The DEC of New York suggest these different types of baits and lures:

1) Jigs

Jigs are always a must for walleye fishing. Jigs are a popular lure for walleye, mainly because they work under a wide range of conditions. A spinning reel works best with jigs, and a  6 to 7 1/2 foot medium action rod.

2) Blade Baits

Blade baits are slim metal lures that sink quickly. This makes them perfect for deep water. Popular walleye colors according to the DEC are gold, silver and fire tiger. They suggest a 6 to 7 1/2 foot medium heavy action rod, and any type of reel should work.

3) Stickbaits

Stickbaits from 4 to 6 inches are commonly used, but walleye are also taken on very large stickbaits. Cast it out and reel it in at a steady pace. A spinning reel is suggested, and so is a 6 to 7 foot medium action rod.

4) Live Bait Rigs

When in doubt, use live bait. Popular live baits for walleye include night crawlers, minnows and leeches. They can be fished in a variety of ways like spinner rigs and bottom bouncing. A spinning reel is suggested, and so is a 6 to 7 foot medium action rod.
