4 Boaters Rescued As Their Craft Sinks

GREAT RIVER, N.Y. (AP) — Police say four people have been rescued from a sinking boat off Long Island.

It happened around 5:30 p.m. Monday about a quarter-mile south of Timber Point Marina in Great River. The Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau got a call saying the 19-foot motorboat was taking on water for an unknown reason.

Officers Robert Reed, James Curley, Robert Reuter and Christian Schnoor arrived to find the boat completely under water.

Some of the four people aboard were clutching floating cushions or a cooler, while others had life preservers. The two men and two women ranged in age from 53 to 57.

They were helped onto a police boat and brought to the marina, where they all declined medical attention.

The sunken boat, a 1987 Four Winns, was towed to shore.
