6 People Rescued From Sinking Boat on Oneida Lake
Sylvan Beach, NY (WIBX) - The Oneida County Sheriff's Office Marine Patrol Unit responded to a 911 call Saturday afternoon for a vessel taking on water rapidly and starting to sink, about 4 miles west of Sylvan Beach on Oneida Lake.
6 people were reported to be aboard. The Oneida County Sheriff's Department located the vessel about 2 miles west of Sylvan Beach minutes later.
According to authorities, the operator, 31-year old Michael Romanowski of Utica, along with 5 other passengers were all wearing personal flotation devices upon arrival. The 6 were brought aboard Marine-1 with no reported injuries.
It's believed the cause of the water coming into the sinking vessel was from a defective boat plug.
The Sylvan Beach Fire Department's Water Rescue Vessel arrived on scene and transported 5 of the parties to the Emergency Wall of the Barge Canal in the Village of Sylvan Beach.
Marine-1 then towed the disabled vessel to Snug Harbor Marina without further incident.
