7 Killed, 13 Missing as Boat Sinks in Indonesia
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — An official says a boat carrying villagers sank after hitting a stump in a river in western Indonesia, leaving a woman and six children dead and at least 13 others missing.
National disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho says the boat ran out of fuel early Thursday and was swept by the current into the stump, causing it to flip over and sink in the Barombang River in North Sumatra.
He said rescuers have recovered seven bodies and are searching for 13 others. Authorities are investigating reports that more people may have been aboard the boat.
The victims included a 25-year-old woman and six children between the ages of 7 months and 11 years.
On Tuesday, a boat accident in Kalimantan left 15 people dead and three missing.
