AMSTERDAM, N.Y. (AP) — Police in upstate New York say an 8-year-old boy has been hospitalized after being mauled by a family dog.

WRGB-TV reports (http://bit.ly/2wApIE4 ) the attack happened around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at an Amsterdam home. Police say the family pit bull mauled the child before his mother, 27-year-old Jasmine Tirado, tried to intervene. Authorities say the dog bit Tirado's finger off.

The child was rushed to a hospital with severe throat injuries. Tirado was also treated for injuries.

Amsterdam Police Sgt. Sal Megna says he is not sure if the dog was provoked.

Police say the dog involved in the attack is now locked in a kennel at the home.

Police continue to investigate.
