Natural gas heating customers in upstate New York could see a reduction of 10% or more on their total natural gas bill this winter compared to last year.

National Grid says depending on where you live electricity customers are also projected to see bills that are 3 to 9% lower than last year.

The potential decrease in natural gas bills is the result of current forecasts that call for lower natural gas supply prices on the wholesale market - meaning a typical residential heating customer could pay around $65 less than last year for the same usage.

National Grid says the potential lower costs assumes normal winter weather and typical usage.

The potential decrease is due in part to steps the company has taken to 'lock in' electricity supply prices to reduce monthly volatility in customer bills.

National Grid says they have also asked the State Public Service Commission to approve a plan that would allow more flexibility in how the company recovers supply costs that are higher than forecasted for residential and small commercial customers.

If the request is approved, National Grid could collect the higher wholesale prices over a number of months, instead of a single month, reducing customer impact.
