Gas Prices, Holiday Travel Down
Gas Prices, Holiday Travel Down

Local gas prices continue to inch downward.

The average price in the Utica-Rome area is $3.74 a gallon, however Ed Welch of Triple A says if you shop around, you'll find some stations in the 3.60's.

Welch says, though, if you have to travel more than 10 miles to purchase cheaper gas, you're defeating the purpose.

While prices are down from June's all time-high of $4.23 per gallon, Welch says a year ago we were paying $2.91. And that is having an impact on travel plans.

Triple A estimates more than 34 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more this holiday weekend which is 0.9% drop from Labor Day weekend last year.

Welch says it's the third consecutive holiday in which the number of people traveling 50 miles or more has dropped from the previous year, the first time that's happend since Triple A began tracking holiday travel.

A look at average gas prices in regions around the state:

Buffalo-$3.91

NYC-$3.90

Rochester-$3.85

Syracuse-$3.77

Albany-$3.75

Utica/Rome-$3.74

Binghamton-$3.70
