New legislation would ensure state income tax filers get refunds promptly. Assemblywoman RoAnn Desitio is sponsoring legislation that would require state income tax filers who are entitled to a refund receive it within 30 days. This legislation comes in response to Governor Paterson's plan to hold state tax returns to pay New York's debt. The bill also requires the Taxation Department to issue a written notice if refunds will be delayed beyond 30 days. Destito says hardworking families deserve to get their refunds as soon as possible or it will worsen the state's economic problems.
