Busy Weekend for Utica Firefighters

It was a busy weekend for Utica firefighters, who battled three fires, two that happened within 15 minutes of each other. Firefighters were called to 201 Higby Road just before 11:00 Saturday night for a house fire. The fire started when a large tree limb fell onto an electrical line, causing an electrical malfunction in the dishwasher in the kitchen. Then just after 11:00, firefighters responded to the State Office Building on Genesee Street. Chief Fire Marshal Raymond Beck says the fire started in a computer room of the State Department of Labor's Regional Office and One Stop Career Center on the first-floor of the building. The fire destroyed the contents of the room and smoke and water damage was reported throughout the second-floor. It took firefighters from Utica, New Hartford, Maynard and New York Mills several hours to bring the blaze under control. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The One Stop Career Center will re-open today in a temporary location in the conference Room A on the first-floor of the State Office Building.  Meanwhile, six people were displaced by a Sunday night fire at 14-08/14-10 Sunset Avenue. Firefighters fought the blaze for several hours before it was deemed under control. There were four apartments in the building, three of whiich were occupied. The Red Cross is providing assistance to the fire victims. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
