Halloween is coming up and AAA has some tips for both adults and children to stay safe this weekend.

Ed Welsh of AAA Central New York says on Halloween night 50% of all fatal motor vehicle accidents nationwide involve drunken drivers, and with Halloween on a Friday night it's very important to have a designated driver or the number to a taxi service.

Here's a few easy tips for Halloween partygoers to help keep the roadways safe:

  • Designate a sober driver
  • Consider an overnight stay
  • Don't let impaired guests drive
  • Avoid driving through residential areas
  • Watch for children in the street
  • Always obey the speed limit and reduce speed by 10 mph when in residential neighborhoods

Here's some more tips to keep trick-or-treaters safe this Halloween:

  • Choose highly visible costumes
  • Make sure costumes fit well
  • Review safety precautions with children
  • Plan your trick-or-treating route in advance
  • Carry a flashlight with fresh batteries or use glow sticks to stand out
