ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Organizations from around New York state that advocate for the poor, the hungry and the homeless are rallying at the state Capitol as lawmakers begin their work for 2017.

The groups will gather Tuesday for the annual event known as the People's State of the State, named after the state of the state address given by the governor each year.

The event is intended to draw attention to housing, homelessness, hunger, poverty and other issues impacting the state's most vulnerable citizens.

The legislative session begins Wednesday.
