Fred Akshar has announced he's seeking a full two-year term in the New York state Senate.

Akshar was elected to represent the 52nd District last November in a special election after Thomas Libous was expelled from the Senate following his conviction for lying to FBI agents.

Akshar - a Republican - kicked off his re-election campaign Thursday evening at a gathering of supporters at Chenango Valley State Park.

Akshar faces a challenge from Democrat Sharon Ball. The Whitney Point resident announced her candidacy last month. She served as executive director of the Broome County Art Council for more than a decade.
