More than seven million people may be affected by the cyberattack on Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield. Hackers may now have your personal information.Here is a statement from Christopher C. Booth, President and CEO of Excellus:

 "Excellus BlueCross BlueShield was targeted in a very sophisticated cyberattack. We recognize the frustration and concern that this news may cause, and we are making services available to protect you and your information moving forward.

 We are providing two years of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services.  You can sign up for these services today. We have also established a toll-free number – 1-877-589-3331 – where you can call with questions related to this incident."

Excellus BCBS investigation revealed that the first attack occurred December 23, 2013, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation was notified.  The investigation also determined that the attackers may have gained unauthorized access to individuals’ information, which could include name, date of birth, Social Security number, mailing address, telephone number, member identification number, financial account information, and claims information.  This incident also affected members of other Blue Cross Blue Shield plans who sought treatment in the 31-county upstate New York service area of Excellus BCBS. Individuals who do business with EBCBS and provided them with their financial account information or Social Security number are also affected.

According to the Excellus website, this incident affects members, patients, or others who have done business with the plans listed:

  • BlueCard Members
  • BlueCross BlueShield of Central New York
  • BlueCross BlueShleld of the Rochester Area
  • BlueCross BlueShield of Utica-Watertown Area
  • Excellus BlueCross BlueShield
