Arrieta Stifles Yankees; Nova’s Streak Ends
Jake Arrieta (2-2) struck out nine, tossing eight innings of five-hit ball as the Baltimore Orioles beat the pinstripes 5-0 on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium, ending Ivan Nova's decisions streak.
Nova (3-1) had won 15 straight decisions, but was tagged for five runs through 6 1/3 innings on nine hits and four walks.
Matt Weiters drove in two runs with a double and a solo-homer. Nick Johnson, who got his first hit of the year on Tuesday, got two more hits and an RBI Wednesday.
Yankees third baseman Eric Chavez was helped off the field while attempting bat in the bottom of the fifth innings. Chavez appeared dazed. It was reported during the YES Network broadcast that Chavez may have suffered whiplash diving for a ground ball down the line in the top half of the inning.
Alex Rodriguez had two of New York's hits. Raul Ibanez, Curtis Granderson and Robinson Cano each had one.
The Yankees fall to 13-11 after dropping the last two of the three game series with Baltimore (16-9). They'll open a series in Kansas City on Thursday night at 8:10.
