An armed standoff between a Madison County man and police is over with the suspect reportedly dead.

Police say 26 year old Eric Duncan had barricaded himself and a female hostage inside a vacant home on Wednesday night.

Just before 4:30 this morning, police say the female hostage was able to escape the house and was evaluated by medical personnel on the scene.

Madison County Sheriffs SWAT teams went into the house at around 9:30 this morning where they found Duncan dead.

The Onondaga County Medical Examiners Office is working to determine Duncan's cause of death.

Police say the standoff began on Wednesday night when Duncan began threatening people in the High Bridge Area in the Town of Cuyler.

Duncan then reportedly took the victim hostage and left on foot heading towards the Town of DeRuyter.

Because of the direction Duncan was traveling, Police notified officials at DeRuyter Central Schools where a volleyball game was being held and requested the school be locked down as a precaution.

Police were able to safely evacuate all 54 students and spectators at the game and search the school.

The school was determined to be safe and was able to open on time Thursday morning with no risk or safety concerns.

Madison County Sheriffs say they will keep a police presence at the scene until it has been fully investigated and cleared.
