Army Depot Buyer Creates Company To Preserve White Deer

ROMULUS, N.Y. (AP) — The new owner of the former Seneca Army Depot in the Finger Lakes has created a company to oversee a wildlife preserve for the site's rare white deer herd.

Seneca Iron Works owner Earl Martin says Deer Haven Park LLC will manage a section of the 7,000-acre depot site as a preserve for the herd of about 75 white deer as well as other wildlife. Martin says Monday the company is currently planting turnips, clover and other wildlife food.

Martin is also creating a social media plan for Deer Haven Park to provide a public forum to foster collaboration in support of the white deer.

Martin's winning $900,000 bid for the depot includes plans to create 200 jobs and expand his iron works business, which makes dairy farm equipment.
