WIBX - With tax season approaching, the Attorney General's Office is warning consumers about tax preparation and IRS impersonation schemes.

This year sophisticated scammers are even using so-called "spoofing" technology to make their caller ID numbers look like legitimate IRS telephone extensions.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says, "Preying on the desperation of people in a tough economy is unconscionable...Tax season is stressful enough as it is.  The last thing New Yorkers need to worry about is having their identities stolen."  He is asking the public to notify his office immediately of any suspicious or fraudulent tax firms.

Consumers with questions can call the Attorney General's Office at: (800) 771.7755.
