The continued development of the proposed U District in downtown Utica has taken another step forward.

The Mohawk Valley Memorial Auditorium Authority has purchased the Tartan Textile property next to the Aud.

The property spans nearly two acres and encompasses the entire city block between Broadway and Charles Street.

With the Adirondack Bank Center right across the street, plans for the property will focus on the Nexus Center -- a tournament-based sports and recreation hub.

“The Authority has been striving towards procuring the Tartan property for a long time, so it is rewarding to see things finally come full circle,” said Carl Annese, Chairman of the AUD Authority. “I know I speak for the Authority as a whole when I say that that land is unbound in its potential, and that it will allow us to continue to push forward to make our Nexus Center project a reality.”

Demolition of the existing Tartan Textile building is scheduled to start early in the new year.
