Local law enforcement agencies did not properly safeguard seized property, including cash, drugs, firearms and vehicles.

That's according to an audit released by state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli.

The audit reviewed records in ten municipalities, including Herkimer and Madison Counties.

Six law enforcement agencies had vehicles listed in their current inventory that were no longer in their possession, while four agencies were missing 21 firearms.  Drugs accounted for 31% of the missing items

DiNapoli says local law enforcement officials have already taken steps to address the concerns in the audit.
