Tuscon, AZ (WIBX) - Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, (D-AZ)  is stepping down. Giffords made the announcement via YouTube video. Giffords thanked the community for the support she's received in the past year and says she plans to focus on her recovery.

The Democratic lawmaker was shot in the head and critically injured a year ago during a "Congress On Your Corner" event at a super market in Tuscon. More than a dozen people were injured and six others were killed when alleged shooter Jared Loughner opened fire on the crowd that gathered for the town hall style event. Loughner remains jailed on a long list of charges, including attempting to assassinate a member of Congress. New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand says she admires her friend and fellow Congress member Gabrielle Giffords for her decision to step down.
