Utica, NY (WIBX) - Think that bath salts are out of the news?

Although legislation is making it more difficult to procure the drugs at mainstream shops right now, educators, public health officials, law enforcement leaders, and legislators who gathered at Utica College say the efficacy of new laws is only temporary.

Jeanna Marraffa, toxicologist and Assistant Clinical Director of the Upstate New York Poison Control Center, says the times, as well as the rules, have changed.

She says, "We are really in a whole new world of designer drugs and drugs of abuse."

And as law enforcement struggles to keep its footing on the ground in that new world, manufacturers of dangerous drugs are keeping pace. New batches of designer drugs are expected to come from overseas within months and present officials with the same challenges all over again.

In the meantime they are asking the public to remain aware of products they are purchasing, and parents to be extra cautious about things that their children and teenagers bring home.
