Big Storm Floods Basements, Knocks Out Power In Parts Of NY

WATERTOWN, N.Y. (AP) — Home and business owners in New York's North Country are pumping out basements after a storm dumped 3 to 5 inches across the region in a 24-hour period.

The storm that hammered the Northeast with hurricane-force wind and heavy rain caused problems from the Rochester area to the Hudson Valley. Several thousand utility customers lost power, and about 10,000 of them in eastern New York remain without electricity service Tuesday morning.

Emergency management officials in Jefferson County say numerous streets and roads were closed by flooding Monday. WWNY-TV in Watertown reports that the city's fire department responded to more than 100 calls from people seeking assistance for flooded basements.

Flash flood, lake shore flood and high wind watches or warnings remain in effect for parts of northern New York.
