For the first time, the City of Binghamton’s Fire Department is awarded a Class 1 elite ranking from the Insurance Services Office.  It’s the highest rating given by the organization.

Binghamton is one of only six in New York State to get the designation, along with New York City, Yonkers, White Plains, Syracuse and Rochester.

The ISO rates more than two thousand fire departments in the state and bases its score on fire department, emergency communications, water supply and divergence/community risk reduction.  Specific areas like equipment, training, size, type and installation of fire hydrants and incident management are considered.

The Binghamton Fire Department has five fire stations, a training facility and 116 active firefighters.
