Authorities late Saturday afternoon announced 35-year-old Naheen Spencer had died at a hospital where he was taken following the early-morning shooting.

In revealing Spencer's death, city police did not provide any additional information regarding the circumstances surrounding the attack.

Detectives had said police were called to Victoria's Café at 153 Susquehanna Street at 3:58 a.m. to investigate a reported shooting that had occurred in the area of the establishment.

Officers who arrived at the scene discovered Spencer had been wounded. He had been reported in critical condition at a hospital shortly after the incident.

The atmosphere following the shooting turned tense with police calling for backup from other city officers and nearby agencies to handle an "unruly crowd."

Police did not indicate how many people had gathered in the area after Spencer was shot. No arrests were reported in connection with those who were at the scene following the attack.

Detectives have not revealed information about a possible motive or whether they believe the shooter was known to Spencer.

People with information about the incident may contact the Binghamton Police detective bureau at 607.772.7080.
