As many Central New Yorkers know, this area is not unfamiliar with the current black bear population. The most recent sighting was at Herkimer College.

Students received an email on Thursday making them aware of the sighting and informed them that the situation is being handled.

They also gave tips to students on what to do if they encountered a bear in the future. The email states, "Never Approach, Surround, or Corner a Bear. Bears aggressively defend themselves when they feel threatened." Be especially cautious around cubs as mother bears are very protective." They also recommend to never run from a bear but to speak loudly, in a calm voice, and slowly back away.

The email was provided to WIBX by a student at Herkimer College. If anyone spots a bear in the area of Herkimer College or the surrounding community, please contact proper officials. Students are directed to call Campus Security at extension 8616.
