Croghan, NY (WIBX) - State Police in Lowville responded to a reported drowning that occurred on the Beaver River, downstream of the Taylorville Dam in the Town of Croghan, in an area commonly referred to as "Double Eddy". 

The victim was identified as 14-year-old Mckinley W. Day of Cheshire County, England, who was visiting our area with his mother and younger brother.  The investigation revealed that the boy was swimming in a quiet pool downstream of the rapids below Taylorville Dam with his younger brother and a family friend. 

While swimming, the victim advised that he was in trouble and the friend attempted to rescue him but was unsuccessful.  Calls for help alerted an off duty Idaho State Trooper, who was in the area vacationing.  The off-duty Trooper and his neice, a trained life guard, responded and minutes later located the 14-year-old in about 8 feet of water. 

Efforts to revive the boy were unsuccessful and he was pronounced deceased at Lewis County General Hospital.  State Police were assisted at the scene by Lewis County Sheriff's Department, New York State Forest Rangers, Croghan Ambulance personnel and Lewis County Search and Rescue.
