Legislation that toughens state regulations governing gas prices has passed the state Assembly.

Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi sponsored the bill, which seeks to reduce the significant price differences for gasoline between the Mohawk Valley region and other areas of the state

Brindisi says the law would toughen existing state regulations to make sure everyone involved in the selling of retail gasoline is prohibited from setting its price for arbitrary reasons, which is known as zone pricing.

He says there's simply no justifiable reason for price differences of 15 to 30 cents a gallon between two locations less than 50 miles apart, when the gasoline being sold comes from the same source.

Under the bill, the State Attorney General's Office will be able to investigate reports from consumers of possible zone pricing.
