Calling for "potty parity", Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi is sponsoring legislation to provide equal access for men and women to baby changing stations.

The legislation would require diaper changing accommodations in all new or substantially renovated restrooms in public buildings in the state. The new law would only apply to newly built restrooms, or to restrooms being renovated that require a building permit and more than $10,000 in upgrades.

Brindisi says many men now care for babies, and it's only fair to provide them with access to changing stations.

“There has been a perception through the years that baby changing stations are only used by women, but that increasingly is not the case.  Fathers and grandfathers now often are caregivers, and they should be able to find a safe, suitable place to change a diaper while they are in a public building.  The time has come for potty parity in New York State,” Brindisi said.

Brindisi's legislation follows President Obama’s signature earlier this month of the ‘Bathrooms Accessible in Every Situation’ or BABIES Act, which requires baby changing equipment in both men’s and women’s restrooms in public buildings operated by the federal government.
