LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities are trying to determine if a recently discovered broken sewer line is a source of pollution that has closed a popular Adirondack lake beach several times since last summer.

The Post-Star of Glens Falls reports (http://bit.ly/2sZNyaM ) public works crews in the village of Lake George found the break late last week near the state-owned Million Dollar Beach.

A natural gas line installed the past two years apparently punctured the sewer line, which was repaired on Friday.

A local official says the broken sewer line was likely a contributing factor in E. coli contamination of the lake's southeast corner going back to last August. Elevated bacteria counts in that area of the lake forced the closure of Million Dollar Beach several times, most recently last month.

The effort to find possible causes for the contamination continues.
