Bruno Trial Date Uncertain

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A federal judge won't set a firm date for another fraud trial for the former leader of New York's Senate while defense attorneys pursue further appeals.

Instead, U.S. District Judge Gary Sharpe has tentatively set Joseph Bruno's new trial for 60 days after the appellate court decides whether to temporarily halt proceedings and reconsider his case.

Sharpe says he won't spend money to start gathering jurors until it's clear he won't have to repeat the process.

Defense Attorney William Dreyer plans to file by Sept. 1 for review of the recent appellate ruling that another Bruno trial isn't double jeopardy.

The 84-year-old Bruno's fraud convictions from 2009 were overturned on appeal.

Prosecutors say he accepted more than $400,000 from a businessman for helping with state grants.

He denies any wrongdoing.
