Buffalo Zoo Rhinoceros Moving To San Diego Zoo To Breed

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — An Indian rhinoceros born at the Buffalo Zoo two years ago is moving to San Diego to become part of a breeding program.

The Buffalo Zoo says the rhino's birth in 2014 was considered a miracle of science because it was the result of artificial insemination that used the frozen DNA of a rhino that had died 10 years earlier.

The female named Molly will move by the end of this month to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park at the recommendation of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' species survival plan. The California zoo houses the largest group of Indian rhinos in captivity.

The species is listed as vulnerable by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.
