NORTH COLLINS, N.Y. (AP) — A buried human body has been excavated not far from Lake Erie after hikers happened upon a boot sticking out of the ground in a local park.

Erie County deputies examining the boot found a human skeleton in the North Collins park on Saturday. An Erie County Sheriff's Office spokesperson says an anthropology team from Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania, assisted with the excavation that extended into Sunday.

Officials say they're unsure how long the remains have been buried. Erie County Sheriff's Captain Greg Savage says it's possible the body has been buried there for 10 years or more.

The body is still not fully excavated and the person's identity is unknown. Police continue to investigate.
