Burlington, Vermont Approves Gun Control Measures

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Burlington's City Council has voted to approve several gun-control measures: allowing police to seize firearms in cases of suspected domestic abuse, requiring trigger locks for safe gun storage and prohibiting firearms in bars.

A fourth provision that would have created a permit system for the concealed carrying of guns didn't pass Monday night.

The Burlington Free Press reports a forum before the meeting was packed with supporters and opponents of the proposed charter changes.

Some people said the city did not have the authority to regulate weapons. Councilor Norman Blais said any suggestion that the Council is doing some illegal is wrong.

The changes will return to the Council for public hearings. The measures would then need to be accepted by voters in March and approved by the state Legislature.
