It is the stuff of nightmares, a creature crawling from down below while you are, well, taking care of business.

But could it actually happen?  And, while it may be possible for a bug, for example, to find its way in through the top, could a mammal made its way through the narrow passages and liquid- or sludge-filled tunnels into your porcelain cistern?

The answer, experts say, is yes.

National Geographic's experts published a video explanation in August of how at least furry creatures gets the job done.
