Whitesboro, NY (WIBX) - A Whitesboro teacher has been named the Firemen's Association of the State of New York's Teacher of the Year.

Marcy's Paula Candella, a first grade teacher at Westmoreland Road Elementary School, was nominated by Whitesboro Fire Chief Peter Sobel and FASNY Director Brian McQueen.

At a ceremony today she was credited with not only teaching students safety awareness but also with making children unafraid of fire fighters and others in uniform during crises and emergencies.

School Principal David Russo also honored a number of students at today's ceremony including:

  • Gabriella Kelly (3rd place, FASNY Student Poster Award)
  • Alyssa Sherline (Bus Poster Contest)
  • Jeff Wright (Safety Patrol)
  • Hailey Dote, Pierce Saporito, Tyenyce Leigh (American Heart Association Post Contest winners)
