Cano Wins 2011 Home Run Derby

Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano captured the 2011 Home Run Derby, beating Boston first baseman Adrian Gonzalez in record fashion Monday night.

Cano, who was in the derby for the first time in his career, smacked a final round-record 12 long balls to beat Gonzalez.

Cano's father, Jose, pitched to him in the derby. Jose Cano, who pitched in six games for the Houston Astros during the 1989 season, was able to groove the ball right in the sweet spot for his son.

He tied Gonzalez with a 472-foot blast to right-center field and then paused for a moment to grab a sports drink and converse with his American League teammates. Jose then delivered a ball that ended up 408 feet over the wall in right-center.

The two captains for their respective leagues - Milwaukee's Prince Fielder and Boston's David Ortiz, were eliminated in the second round.

The 12 homers hit in the final round set a derby record. Bobby Abreu (2005) and Ortiz (2010) each hit 11 homers.

The AL hit a record 76 homers in the event to just 19 for the National League.
