SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Police in central New York say a car crashed into a utility pole and burst into flames after the driver heard bullets hit the vehicle.

Syracuse police say the 41-year-old man driving the car was able to escape the vehicle early Sunday in Syracuse and wasn't hurt. He then fled the area out of fears for his safety.

Investigators discovered that a 23-year-old man was hit by the car and suffered arm, wrist and leg injuries. Police say his injuries aren't considered to be life-threatening.

Police say he too heard gunshots.

Officers say the vehicle had sustained damage from bullets. The driver hasn't been ticketed.
