MALONE, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a fire in a northern New York apartment building apparently started in the residence of the blaze's lone fatality.

Officials in Franklin County say the fire started around 1:20 a.m. Saturday in a four-story apartment building in the village of Malone, 155 miles (249.44 kilometers) north of Albany.

The Press-Republican of Plattsburgh (http://bit.ly/2u16L9v ) reports that every fire company in the county battled the blaze along with some from neighboring St. Lawrence and Clinton counties. The fire gutted the building.

Authorities say the fire killed Eddie Lamay and displaced 30 other residents. Village police say the blaze appears to have started in Lamay's apartment. He was pronounced dead at 11 a.m. Saturday.

A local shelter was providing accommodations for the displaced.

The state Office of Fire Prevention and Control is investigating the cause.
