CICERO, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say the person who died after in a three-vehicle crash on a central New York highway was a 16-year-old boy from the Utica area.

State police say 16-year-old Kameron Evans from Whitesboro was driving north on Interstate 81 around 6:30 a.m. Monday when his car crossed the grassy median and collided with a southbound vehicle in the Onondaga County town of Cicero, just north of Syracuse.

Evans' car was then hit by a van.

A front-seat passenger in his car, Sean Jewett of Whitesboro, was taken to a Syracuse hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Evans was listed in critical condition. The driver of the other car was listed in stable condition.

The highway's southbound lanes were closed for several hours.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
