Christmas Breakfast Traditions From Around the World

The last thing on the minds of children Christmas morning, is breakfast.  It’s all about seeing what Santa left under the tree, then playing with the new toys you received.  Since breakfast is the most important meal of the day, it’s important to get the kids to eat.  The tradition at our house was croissants and cinnamon rolls my mother had made the night before.

Here are other family traditions from around the world.

Atole – Mexico

Atole is an ancient Mexican beverage. It’s thickened with cornmeal and it’s chocolate version is popular for breakfast on Christmas morning.

Dresdner Stollen – Germany

Dresdner Stollen is the famous fruitcake from Dresden Germany. It’s made from a rich yeast dough mixed with candied fruit and almonds. Loaves are brushed with butter, topped with powdered sugar and stored for at least two weeks before eating.

Linzertorte – Austria

Linzertorte is a jam tart with a crumbly crust made with hazelnuts or almonds, a simple filling of currant or raspberry jam and a distinctive lattice top.

Pasteles – Puerto Rico

Pasteles are cakes in banana leaves and comes from Puerto Rico. The whole family usually makes these starchy parcels.

Pavlova – Australia/New Zealand

Australia and New Zealand claim to have created Pavlova to honor the great Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova. It’s a baked meringue, crispy on the outside and marshmallowy on the inside. It’s spread with whipped cream and topped with fresh fruit
