Clayton Whittemore will spend 25 years to life behind bars for the September 2012 murder of Alexandra Kogut of New Hartford.

Whittemore received the maximum sentence today in Monroe County Court in Rochester.

The 22-year old Whittemore was found guilty of second-degree murder in May for beating Kogut to death in her College of Brockport dorm room.

Kogut's mother Becky spoke at the sentencing about the night Alex was killed.

She also said Whittemore didn't deserve to ever leave prison.

Whittemore also spoke at the sentencing.

He apologized to Kogut's family, saying he never intended for her death to happen.

Whittemore also said he thinks about it every day, and he'll spend the rest of his life trying to make up for it.

Judge Daniel Doyle said two main items stood out in the case: the brutality of the crime, and when Whittemore could've gotten help for Kogut and did not.
