Syracuse, NY (WIBX) - The American Red Cross Central New York Chapter is expected to send 11 volunteers to New York City, New Jersey and other areas along the East Coast that were devastated by Hurricane Sandy.

The volunteers will perform a variety of duties, including disaster assessment, mass care sheltering and mass care feeding.

They'll leave for their assignments this afternoon.

On Monday night, the Red Cross opened two shelters because of power outages -- one in Lee Center and the other in Oneonta.

A total of 15 residents spent the night in the shelters.
