Colgate Univesity football product Nate Eachus turned enough heads in the preseason to earn a spot on the Kansas City Chiefs' Week 1 53-man roster, and the nickname 'Rudy'.

The undrafted rookie ran for 206 yards on 34 carries this preseason, including 10 rushes for 98 yards two weeks ago, and 99 yards on 21 attempts in the team's final exhibition vs. Green Bay.

That was good enough for third most rushing yards this preseason, behind only Arizona's William Powell and Jacksonville's Rashad Jennings.

Eachus is deep on the chart behind Jamaal Charles, Peyton Hillis and backups Shaun Draughn and Cyrus Gray, but he did fill in as a fullback early on in camp, something he hadn't done before, which seems to make him a utility-type-back, and very vaulable in a game that leaves some many players banged up from week to week.

At 5-10 and 212 pounds, Eachus has earned the nickname 'Rudy' from fans, something he told KCChiefs.com is likely due to his No. 45 jersey.

The article on the team's website also shed some light on when the nickname was born:

An injury to Gray left the door open for Eachus to command a higher workload and he quickly became a fan favorite when he rushed for 98 yards on 10 carries in the second half of Kansas City’s lopsided loss to Seattle week three of the preseason.

Eachus exited to a standing ovation and fans chanted “Rudy,” as he made his way to Arrowhead’s 50-yard line tunnel.

“If you can get on the field and produce, somebody is going to see you,” Eachus said.
