NEW YORK (AP) — A private university in New York is offering a new scholarship open to the children of military service members, as well as police and firefighters nationwide.

St. John's University says the scholarship will be open to the children of active service officers, veterans and those who died in the line of duty. The New York Post reports the St. John's Service Scholarship Awards will be a $2,000 annual scholarship .

College spokesman Brian Browne says approximately 10 percent of the incoming freshman class will be eligible. College Provost Jorge Rodriguez says the scholarships are in line with the university's mission to "give back to some of our bravest citizens."

The college has campuses in Queens, Staten Island and Manhattan.
