The  New York State Education Department released the latest Common Core test results today.

The English and Math versions of the controversial exams were given to students in grades three through eight this past spring.

The percentage of students who scored at the proficient level in ELA increased by nearly two-percentage points to just under 40-percent.  In Math, student proficiency increased by just over one-percent.

The percentage of students who opted out of testing was about 19-percent, a slight decrease from 2016.

State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia says the test scores are a positive sign that the state continues to steadily head in the right direction.
